There are hundreds of places in Kerala offering Ayurveda. Most of the reasons they give you to choose them are interchangeable — peaceful setting, expert therapists, authentic treatments, personalised care.

So here are ten reasons that are specific, checkable, and difficult for another property to copy.

1. A treatment lineage that goes back to 1952 — and to a royal court

This is the reason that matters most, and it is not something a resort can acquire by hiring staff.

Akanta is not a standalone resort that added an Ayurveda wing. It is the residential arm of Sree Rudravilasam Vaidyasala Ayurveda Hospital and Research Center, established in 1952 by Panditarajan Sri. Trikkovil Rama Warrier — physician to the Kochi royal family, who received the title Panditarajan from the Maharaja of Cochin in recognition of his knowledge of Ayurveda and Indian philosophy.

That practice is carried forward today by his granddaughter, Dr. Seetha Lekshmi M.D (Ay), together with Dr. Rajeev Kumar. Akanta Ayurveda & Yoga Cherai was established in 2018 specifically to deliver that hospital’s treatment in a modern residential facility between the backwaters and the Arabian Sea.

When you are treated at Akanta, you are receiving protocols refined across three generations of one family — not a programme assembled last year.

2. Qualified Ayurvedic physicians, on site

Treatment is directed by qualified doctors, not by therapists working from a fixed menu. Alongside Dr. Seetha Lekshmi and Dr. Rajeev Kumar, the team includes Dr. B H Honey Mol, who holds a BAMS from Ahalia Ayurveda Medical College, Kerala, and works in lifestyle management, herbal medicine and preventive care.

This matters day to day. In panchakarma, dosages and timings change constantly based on how a patient is responding. That is a medical judgement, made daily.

3. Treatment is prescribed after examination — never sold in advance

At Akanta, the sequence is: arrive, consult, get assessed, then receive a plan.

Prakriti analysis — establishing your individual constitution — happens before any therapy is scheduled. Two guests on the same programme name will receive different treatments, because they are different people with different imbalances.

This is the fundamental divide between Ayurvedic medicine and Ayurvedic-themed spa service.

4. Nine structured programmes, each built for a specific goal

Rather than one generic “wellness package,” Akanta runs nine distinct programmes, most available in 7, 14, 21 or 28-day formats:

Programme

Focus

Punarjani

Purification therapy — full panchakarma detox

Swasti

Stress management and rejuvenation

Salabha

Weight management (21/28 days only)

Medhya

Intellect, memory and concentration

Sradha

Specialised geriatric care

Kesya

Hair and scalp health

Hiranmayi

Skin, complexion and beautification

Agni

Gut health and digestive disorders

Ritu

Gynaecological health

Note that Salabha, the weight programme, has no 7-day option. Meaningful metabolic change cannot be achieved in a week, and it is not offered as if it could be.

5. Genuine clinical depth across specific conditions

Akanta’s treatments section does not list vague benefits. It sets out, condition by condition, the symptoms, the Ayurvedic correlation, the treatment principle and the specific therapies used.

Conditions covered include Parkinson’s disease (kampavata), stroke rehabilitation (pakshaghatha), sciatica (gridhrasi), osteoarthritis (sandhigata vata), rheumatoid arthritis (vatarakta), spondylosis, frozen shoulder (avabahuka), gout, low back ache (katigraha), PCOS, menstrual disorders, post-menopausal syndrome, infertility, obesity (sthoulya), stress, anxiety and depression.

That level of documented reasoning is rare, and it tells you the centre thinks like a hospital.

6. The full classical Kerala therapy range

Treatments delivered include abhyangam (medicated oil massage), pizhichil (a continuous stream of warm oil poured over the body), shirodhara (a steady stream of oil over the forehead), sashtika shali pinda sweda (njavarakizhi, using medicinal rice boluses), udhwarthanam (herbal powder massage), kativasthi (warm oil retained over the lower back), nasyam, vasthi, virechanam, snehapanam, thalam, lepam, avagaham and rasayana therapies.

These are the classical Kerala procedures, delivered as prescribed courses rather than as individually bookable spa items.

7. One all-inclusive rate — treatments and medicines are not billed on top

This is worth checking at every property you consider, because it is where budgets get destroyed. At many Kerala resorts the advertised rate is room and board, and consultations, medicines and each individual therapy are added to your final bill.

Akanta quotes a single daily rate covering accommodation, treatments, yoga and all meals:

Season

Single occupancy

Double occupancy

May – September

€145 / ₹13,000 per day

€240 / ₹24,000 per day

October – April

€155 / ₹16,000 per day

€260 / ₹27,000 per day

There is also no room-category pricing tier. Whether you are placed in a Standard or a Deluxe room, the programme rate is identical — so there is no upgrade to be sold at the reception desk and no chance of two guests on the same programme paying different amounts.

A minimum seven-night stay is recommended for panchakarma programmes. On the May–September rate, that is €1,015 for seven nights or €2,030 for fourteen, single occupancy, with nothing further to add.

Worth knowing: the lower-priced window contains Karkidakam, the monsoon period the Ayurvedic tradition considers the single best time of year for panchakarma. The optimal clinical season and the lower rate are the same months.

8. Yoga twice daily, included — not charged as an extra

Ayurveda and yoga are designed to work together. Akanta runs rooftop sessions 7:00 to 8:00 AM and 6:00 to 6:30 PM every day, followed by a sunset walk, as a built-in part of the programme and the rate.

The signature Akantamaya Ayur-Yoga retreat goes further, combining prakriti analysis, meditation techniques, dinacharya practice, yoga, pranayama and Ayurveda therapy — including a home remedy class and an introduction to an Ayurvedic first-aid kit, so guests leave with something they can actually use at home.

9. A genuine daily routine and a kitchen that is part of the treatment

Dinacharya — the Ayurvedic daily routine — is half the treatment. Akanta enforces it:

Time

Activity

6:00 – 7:00 AM

Dinacharya (cleansing of all sense organs)

7:00 – 8:00 AM

Yoga and meditation (rooftop)

8:00 – 8:30 AM

Breakfast

9:30 AM onwards

Morning treatment session

11:00 – 11:30 AM

Herbal juice

1:00 – 1:30 PM

Lunch

2:30 PM onwards

Afternoon treatment session

4:00 – 4:30 PM

Herbal tea

6:00 – 6:30 PM

Yoga and meditation (rooftop)

6:30 – 7:00 PM

Sunset walk

7:00 – 7:30 PM

Dinner

Meals are prepared according to individual dosha type using locally sourced organic ingredients, and adjusted as your programme moves through its phases — lighter during cleansing, systematically rebuilt afterwards. Two treatment sessions a day. Dinner by 7:30. Early nights. It is the structure that produces the result.

10. Beach at 750 metres, airport at 46 minutes

Location is the practical reason guests choose Cherai over southern Kerala.

Destination

Distance

Cherai Beach

750 m (1 minute)

Munambam Beach

3.4 km (6 minutes)

Vypin Island

20 km

Paravur

20 km

Aluva

24.5 km

Edappally

25.3 km

Cochin International Airport

26.4 km (46 minutes)

Kochi (Cochin) city

27 km

Kalady

32.6 km

Kumbalangi

42.3 km

Kovalam and Varkala are four to five hours from Cochin airport. Cherai is under an hour — which matters after a long-haul flight, and matters again on departure day when you will be more tired than you expect.

The resort itself offers Standard and Deluxe rooms in traditional Kerala architecture, with beach-view and lake-view options and a swimming pool for non-treatment days.

One last thing

The most useful test of any Ayurveda resort is how it answers a clinical question.

Send a message describing your condition and asking which programme and length would be appropriate. A place worth choosing will give you a considered answer — and will sometimes tell you that you need less than you were about to book.

Ask Akanta directly on WhatsApp at +91 99476 15551, or read through the full programme list first.

Information provided here is for general awareness only. Treatment is prescribed solely after individual consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Please consult your doctor before starting any programme or discontinuing existing medication.
