Independence Day Celebrations
are held every year on August 15 to commemorate the day on
which India finally regained her Independence from British
rule after hundred years of fierce struggle in the year 1947.
It is a truly national celebration as it transcends above
all communal, regional and religious barriers and is given
equal importance in all parts of the county.
Independence Day Celebrations
are marked by flag hoistings and cultural performances at
the state level. In Delhi however, Independence Day celebrations
are grand indeed. The celebrations are kick started by the
Prime Minister of India who addresses the nation from atop
the majestic Red Fort, which is followed up by a march past
of the police and armed forces. All this is shown live on
televisions by the media networks.
In Delhi, as the Independence
Day comes near, it is a very common sight to see street hawkers
selling Independence Day merchandise such as plastic flags
and tri-colored balloons, stickers, tee-shirts and greeting
cards. A national holiday, most people use this opportunity
to get together with friends and families amidst the underlying
hope that India would attain the status of a super power nation
one day and eradicate all the evils plaguing the Indian society.
